Can I get my hepatitis A vaccine ?!

Question: Can I get my hepatitis A vaccine ?
OK well last Friday March 11th I got a tattoo and it is a small dove with cursive lettering under it . OK well today is Friday so this has been one week since I got my tattoo and it is told that it takes 2 weeks for it to heal .
so can I still get my hepatitis vaccine April 7th? is that alright? would it cause ANY complications to my tattoo ? p.s I have a heart murmur .

Answers:

First, I like to offer education where I can. Hepatitis A is only spread via the fecal-oral route; thus unless fecal matter has been in the vicinity of your oral cavity, you have nothing to worry about.

Second, If you are concerned hepatitis, the specific hepatitis you should be concerned with regarding tattoos is Hep B or C. These viruses are transmitted through exposure to bodily fluids, unsafe sex with infected individuals, IV drug use, tattoo equipment (if uncleaned), and so on. If your tattoo artist used a new needle for your tattoo, and also used clean equipment, you shouldn't have much to worry about.

Third, It's been 4 days since your tattoo. Post-exposure treatment for hepatits B is initiation of the Hepatitis B vaccine series and administration of the Hepatits B Immunoglobulin. The kicker? The hepatitis Immunoglobulin that would kill the hepatitis can only be used up to 24 hours after any suspected exposure, after that it is ineffective. The even bigger downfall....There is nothing to prevent contraction of Hepatitis C.

I'm not trying to freak you out, just let you know what can be done. I would still recommend getting both the Hepatitis A and B vaccine if you haven't already. They can be administered as a combination injection. Don't worry too much. If you saw a new needle and clean equipment, you're more than likely OK. But be wary of the symptoms of hepatitis.....they are very nonspecific. If you experience any nausea, vomiting, fatigue, right upper abdominal pain, fever.....anything within the next 1-4 months, go see your doctor and they can start you on antiviral medications that may kill the virus. The virus can also be self-limiting as well, meaning it may resolve on its own sometimes. Oh, and you're heart murmur will not be affected by any of these treatments.

Hope that helps! best of luck to you!
