I want to see a doctor about my acne?!

Question: I want to see a doctor about my acne?
I'm 18 years old and there is no sign of my acne getting better anytime soon. I feel like I've been battling with it my whole life, an ever losing battle at that. Sometimes it doesn't bother me, but right now when I look at my friends clear faces I just feel ugly. I have an attractive face, I know I do, but with acne it's much less.

What can I expect from seeing my doctor? Is it covered by the NHS (UK resident)?

Thanks guys :/

Hello,

You would be better to ask your GP for a referral to a Skin Specialist, (Dermatologist), in the UK. The only problem is the waiting list, so I would suggest getting referred as soon as possible. It is possible to pay to see a Specialist privately (for the quick appointment), and then ask to convert to the NHS, which is a bit sneaky, but perfectly valid.

Certainly all treatments for acne are available on the NHS, indeed a doctor's prescription is required for the stronger treatments, antibiotics and such.

Dermatologists are allowed to prescribe Roaccutane (iso-tretinoin) tablets on the NHS, but GP's are not. This is because of the possible side-effects, which mean that this treatment needs proper regular supervision. Isotretinoin works by drying up the natural oil glands in the skin. It is covered quite well here, if you would like to have a look, (click) http://www.acne.org/accutane.html - you should read all the tabs.

Some Dermatologists have taken a special interest in acne, to the point where they are world experts on it, - my local Dermatologist at Harrogate Hospital, North Yorkshire, is one of those. If you live in this area it might be worth making a journey, NHS referrees now get a choice of Hospital. If you need the name, please let me know.

A Specialist has access to a wider range of acne treatments than a GP. GP's can still prescribe the antibiotic tablet treatments, though.

I hope this is of some help.

Best wishes,

A good doctor will look at your skin and give you a prescription. My kids took pills and had prescription face wash and cream.

try not to touch your pimples or your face..if you get scars buy acne scars removal products..
