My Mum's unwell...any help?!

Question: My Mum's unwell...any help?
She has had really swollen legs and feet for the past month, and a swollen stomach for a month too.
She has been undergoing some tests, but she has got to wait a while, but we want to know what to expect, so has anyone got any ideas to what she may have?
They are really big (she has had to take off of work as she can't even fit in shoes) and she hasn't been able to walk out of the house for a month.
Can anyone tell us if this is just something that will come and go and is not serious, or if it could be serious and life changing? We just want to be ready for anything.

Natashaaxo,
With only the details that you supply in your question, there is little chance of a correct answer, just a ‘guestimate’! Swelling of the legs or oedema is related to sodium retention that can be due to renal failure. Diabetes is another possible cause. But when leg swelling and abdominal swelling present together then the problematic area can be the liver. In liver diseases, when the liver is unable to make its protein called albumen, then water accumulates in the abdomen and legs resulting in oedema of the legs and abdomen. Abdominal swelling is a result of ascites - this is excess fluid in the space between the tissues lining the abdomen and abdominal organs - which can be due to liver cirrhosis. This discussion does not imply that that is the cause of your mother’s swelling(s), as this will be discovered when the result of the tests that you have mentioned are presented, but only as a guess as to probable causes. I wish you both well.
