Is it bad if blood sugar level for someone is high for some time (+300) and all !

Question: Is it bad if blood sugar level for someone is high for some time (+300) and all of a sudden drops (+200)?
My aunt has been feeling very ill. She recently had a trip to the hospital with symptoms of vomiting, loss of appetite. Doctors released her and she is now at my home where I am taking care of her. I would go back to the doctors and ask but they couldn't find what was wrong with her in the first place and yet gave her 6 bottles of pills. I am resorting to this just because maybe someone has seen something similar or has more experience with diabetics. Right now she is shivering and coughing.

Answers:

200-300 mg/dL on a persistent basis is extremely unhealthy, but there's no danger in suddenly dropping from 300 to 200 unless that individual is on a downward trend into hypoglycemic range. For example, if a diabetic was 300+ and then injected mega-doses of fast-acting insulin, dropping 100 points in a short period of time, that could be a serious concern because of the possibility of becoming hypoglycemic (<60 mg/dL) at some point.

Dropping from such high levels so quickly can make a person feel hypoglycemic even if they're not because the body acclimates to high blood sugar levels quickly.

The drop could also be caused by not eating (due to the vomiting). The lower blood sugar numbers aren't dangerous--in fact, they're much healthier--but the reason could potentially be dangerous. So, don't fear her being at 200. Instead, worry about why she's vomiting and so sick.

She may be having a blood sugar drop because she hasn't eaten/has been vomiting. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include shaking....not coughing. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is below 60, so she shouldn't be symptomatic from that if you just checked it and it was 200.

You really need to find out what she was in the hospital for and what her pills are for. It is very important for you to call the on-call nurse or her doctor.

No. It is safe until it gets down to about 60. The fact that it is going lower could be a sign of her illness. Diabetics tend to have sugar that goes higher or lower when they are ill. She may need to go back to the hospital for the shivering and coughing. Could be pneumonia. She sounds ill.

300 200 is bad, before or after eating even 2 hours, needs medical consultation

Give her a sweet drink now, and get her to hostpital.
