My son is allergic to the protein in cows milk, what is a good substitute for it!

Question: My son is allergic to the protein in cows milk, what is a good substitute for it?
My son was tested for alergies when he was 13 months old. He is now 17 months old. He had several small allergies listed but the main and biggest on was the protien in cows milk. The allergy tech I spoke with stated that they reccomend to keep the kids on cows milk due to the need for the fat and calcuim content and to also substitute with soy milk. So he has about 6 oz three times per day and we alternate with cows milk and soy milk. He recently was diagnosed with excema which I have researched and it shows that it can and is likely cause by food allergies. The other issue that he has is that he gets constipated. This is an issue that has been going on since he was about 7 months old. His doctor says to use karo syrup and prune juice, high fiber foods... which we try all of it. He does poop usually at least once per day but it is usually always hard pebbles. I feel so bad for him! I have heard of ppl giving their kid goats milk instead of cows milk and soy milk and all the other milks there are. Not sure if I could find that at a grocery store or not..?? When we go back to the docs for his 18 month check up, I am going to talk to his doctor about it again because I hate giving him karo to help him go to the bathroom, but right now, im not sure what else we can do. Does anyone have any reccomendations? Have you tried to give your kid goats milk? What can I give him that has the same fat and calcium content as cows milk? I have also heard recently that soy milk isnt that great to give him either due to the mild estrogen in it.. Not sure what to do.

Answers:

Be careful giving him goat's milk. My son has an allergy to cow's milk and can not tolerate goat's milk either.

Soy milk is the best substitute, but it does not have as much fat as cow's milk.

If the allergist says that it is ok, you can use almond milk, but if he has food allergies they may want to keep him away from nuts until he turns 3.

Don't do rice milk unless its just for cooking. It has almost no fat.

I don't know if you can still get it, but when I was little, they had to feed me goat's milk because other milks made me sick.

This is an excellent resource about understanding and treating allergies, and it is free to download.

go with soy milk. or goat milk

Ask the doctor if goats milk or sheep milk is ok to drink.

both contain more fat and proteine the taste is stronger, you can dilute them with water and add a litle sugar.

but it eating goat cheese is good to, drinking milk is not realy that important. goa cheese contains lot of minerals too
