Hyper/Hypothyroidism - Anxiety Attacks - Confused!?!

Question: Hyper/Hypothyroidism - Anxiety Attacks - Confused!?
Around May of last year I started having severe diarrhea. I couldn't leave the bathroom and I was in immense pain. It was strange because as a child I always had problems with constipation so it was usually NOT going to the bathroom that was a problem. Even as an adult I still suffer from constipation, on a more mild level some days, and worse on other days. Last year around July 2010 I started having breathing problems. It went on for a few days, so I went to several doctors. Each said my breathing was fine. I went to emerge when I became hysterical from feeling like I couldn't breathe. After several blood tests they told me it was likely anxiety and put me on Lorazepam for a few days. I stopped taking it after the first day because it was very strong. I was fine for a long time. Now, just two months ago, I started having breathing problems again. I thought it was because I was stressed out like I had been last time (I am very over-stressed with some bad housing issues). However, when I went to talk with my doctor he wanted to send some blood away to see if I have a thyroid problem. I was surprised to hear this because as a child my dad had a thyroid problem and was told that I would likely get it, as well. So I started doing some research. My hair is quite the same as it always was - and my skin. I sometimes get aches and pains but not often. Again, I am usually constipated (but only mildly). My menstruation is often irregular although I am on birth control so it shouldn't be - it is usually quite short and quite light, but other times it is very heavy - and sometimes it is VERY late (usually it starts before I end my cycle of pills but now it doesn't start for days after I finish my pills. Another symptom - I have anxiety. I get bouts of depression caused by some daily problems, but the bouts only last maybe a day and are few and far between. I have had no weight changes that I know of (my scale is broken so no noticeable weight change lol) but I have been EXTREMELY tired lately. Now I am also just getting over a cold, so I don't know if it is just a mixture of a bunch of events all in one that is leading to this similarity of thyroid problems, but what do you think? My doctor currently put me on something long term to deal with my anxiety attacks.
What if it is hyperthyroidism or hypo? Which one does it sound more like? What if the tests show that I do not have a thyroid problem? I am just curious and confused. I just want to know what is going on.

Answers:

Well your symptoms are listed under hypothyroidism. You are more at risk because your father has thyroid issues so it's worth testing to rule it out. Note: misdiagnosis is common!! The main reason is the TSH test (the test most doctors request) can be normal with hypothyroidism, especially hashimoto's thyroiditis (most common cause of hypothyroidism and swings between hyper and hypo symptoms), so if you don't want to be misdiagnosed then a full thyroid panel is a must. Vitamin D is commonly deficient with hypothyroidism and low levels are significantly linked to cold and flu. Also, depression and anxiety are common symptoms of deficiency of B vitamins. Stress eats away at B vitamins. A few links to help you >>>
