Vomiting after taking insulin?!

Question: Vomiting after taking insulin?
My mum is a type 1 diabetic and she has taken her usual insulin, had her evening meal and then vomited it all back up. She is worried about her blood sugar going low. Any advice please :) xx

Answers:

You don't mention which insulin your mother is taking, my friend, and that MAY have changed any advice being offered, but in any case, you're mother is going to need to check her blood glucose levels pretty frequently for the next few hours. (I'm making an assumption here that it's a bolus insulin ... one of the clear ones ... seeing as you mentioned that she'd had her insulin but thrown back up her evening meal.)

Offer mom some normal, sweetened pop or juice to stop her blood glucose (sugar) levels falling too low. If she does fall too low you may notice that she's confused, sweaty, fast heart rate, wanting to just go to sleep, etc. She'll need to get something sweet into her anyway.

If she should lose consciousness, do NOT give her anything orally ... either drink or food as it could go down the 'wrong way'. You'll need to telephone for an ambulance and explain what's happened but, all things being good, she'll hopefully not reach this stage.

I wish you well .... both of you.

Edit:

Ignore the spambot with the name Chrissie Madine. Lorazepam will NOT help your mother in this situation.

be sure to check frequently throughout the next few hours. If it was quick acting insulin the effects of the insulin should last between 2 and 5 hours. If she is unable to keep any solids down and her blood sugars do drop low then try drinking a sugary drink like lucozade or fruit juice which should be easier to handle. dont panic just keep testing and she'll be fine. also if possible do try to make sure she eats something before bed to prevent a night time hypo.
