Question about babinski reflex?!
Question: Question about babinski reflex?
I have had these symptoms
Right sided weakness (50%)
Lots of pain in right ankle
Some pain in right wrist
Although I've also had some newer symptoms
Extreme dizziness with darting eyes (4x a day)
Loss of appetite
Nausea
Some minimal abdominal pain
Some minimal chest pain
I've had all of these tests come up normal
MRI of brain
MRI of spine
MRI of ankle
Xray of ankle
Several general neurological exams
As of two days ago I did not have a babinski reflex when they checked at the ER although it seemed that last night I did is this possible?
Also if it matters in about one week I will be having an EEG and an EMG.
Answers:
A positive babinski reflex indicates damage to the central nervous system. The Hoffmann's reflex is sometimes described as the upper limb equivalent of the Babinski's reflex>>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjtiasgMg…
There are other tests to try out for neurological problems like the rombergs test and pronator drift >>>>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hOSkmDYA…
"The most common cause for a positive result (Babinski Reflex being present) is either an error in performing the test or else in interpreting the results. (If the foot is pulled as the test is done then the toes may appear to fan). The best result is obtained on the first or second try; repeated tests will probably not yield accurate results."
Possible causes of a positive babinski reflex>>>
* Addison's/pernicious anaemia (due to vitamin B12 deficiency)
* ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)
* Brain tumor (sometimes)
* Familial periodic paralysis
* Friedreich's ataxia
* Grand mal seizure (sometimes a temporary Babinski's reflex is present after a seizure for a short while)
* Head injury
* Hepatoencephalopathy
* Meningitis
* Multiple sclerosis
* Polio (not all forms)
* Rabies
* Spinal cord injury or tumor
* Stroke
* Syringomyelia
* Tuberculosis (when it affects the spine)
