Is it possible to be allergic to barley & not have a gluten allergy/not be a!

Question: Is it possible to be allergic to barley & not have a gluten allergy/not be allergic to other grain/oats?[baby]?
My 8 month old daughter has just tried barley cereal in the last three days, and we don't know if it's be cause she's teething(top teeth), or if it's from from the barley, but she's been VERY pukey the last two days and now she was diarrhea. We are going to take her off the barley cereal and put her back on the rice cereal immediately but I'm just hoping this doesn't mean she's gluten intolerant...

Also, she had no problem with baby oatmeal, so I'm quite confused.
If this doesn't clear up in two days I'm gonna take her to the doctor.

Answers:

Yes, it's quite possible to be allergic to barley. It could also be an intolerance and not a full-blown allergy. It doesn't necessarily mean celiac, but be aware the potential is there.
Some grains can be difficult for a baby to digest.
If you want to try other grains, maybe try quinoa or brown rice. They are much more gentle and easy to digest.
