Is it possible to get your first ear infection at age 30? And are ear infections!

Question: Is it possible to get your first ear infection at age 30? And are ear infections contagious?
I will be 30 years old in a couple months and I have never had an ear infection in my life, even when I was a baby. I have an almost 3 year old son whom we took to the Dr. on Friday for an ear infection. Now my right ear is hurting. The only thing I have to compare it to is swimmers ear that I had in high school. I'm not a Dr. so just curious if I could be getting my first ear infection this late in life? Also curious as to how it relates to my son having one currently if at all? Is this just a fluke or can they be contagious? Thanks for your help!

Hi Stacy! 30 years old is not "late in life," but over 80 years old might be. Yes, you could get your first ear infection at any age in life. Though what feels like an ear infection is sometimes due to allergy and fluid build-up in the middle ear (where infections occur), the fact that both your son and you are hurting does make an infection more likely. Sometimes, an upper respiratory infection, like a cold, could cause the infection and be contagious. You could visit a health clinic or your doctor for a while-you-wait Rapid Strep Throat test to see if prescription antibiotics are indicated. Over-the-counter decongestants might reduce the middle ear fluid and give some pain relief. Viruses simply have to run their course. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Yes, ear infections aren't contagious but they are a result of a cold which are contagious but you can get swimmers ear which i had that feels like it (you get water in your middle ear)

It is possible for you to have it since you have expirience it before

Try and see the doctor about it
