Is it possible for OCD to go away?!

Question: Is it possible for OCD to go away?
When I was younger (maybe 6-8), I remember feeling like I needed to tap my foot a certain amount of times, click a pen, pull the door handle, etc. If I didn't follow the "pattern" I had created by tapping my foot/whatever, I'd have to continue until I felt like I had tapped my foot perfectly in whatever pattern for long enough, until I could stop(which usually didn'nt happen very quickly). Behavior like that was pretty common for me (I think I was the only one who noticed).

Now, I'm not like that at all. Is it possible for someone to have OCD as a child, and then.. lose/be cured of it just by aging? How common is this?

Answers:

OCD is genetic. it can turn on or off depending on circumstance, and the gene for OCd is related to other disorders, (such as DID) and depending on what "switches" the gene on in the first place a person may get one or the other, or have it manifest as, say an eating disorder, or hoarding. that being said, you identified that you had OCD. Normally it's something that can have periods of up and down but to be totally "cured" is....something that is usually a lifelong struggle, or at least something that usually takes counseling or meds. that having been said, being symptom- free for a long time can happen easily. I was like that. I showed symptoms when I was a kid and then I was fine until age 17. then I had two bad years and it went away completely for another 4 years. For some people it can basically be under the mat most of their lives. I'd caution though believing it's "cured" or gone. a big trauma or a lot of stress could potentially set it off. not necessarily, but it could.

abnormal psychology university classes, a lot of personal research and having OCD myself

OCD is a very common disorder. There is no magic pill to get rid of it. If you go to therapy, more than likely you will be forced to face your problem. For example, try not following the pattern. Yes, it will feel uncomfortable but eventually you will become better. There are certain things that can trigger the OCD to become worse (like stress). My OCD has to deal with doors. I have to make sure it is locked a certain number of times. I have to tell myself not to do that. It is hard but it has become better. Hope that helps.
