Is pancreas transplant possible?!

Question: Is pancreas transplant possible?
I'm type 1 and tired of living with it. Suppose in a few years time I start earning and grow rich how much will it cost me? Also I'm not scared of surgeries or taking risks with it. Where can I get it done?

Answers:

Pancreas transplants ARE very possible.

BUT . . . Pancreas transplant is the LEAST reliable of all possible transplants. The "life time" of a transplanted pancreas is often less than five years. that is, after five years, most pancreas transplant patients need ANOTHER transplant.

Due to the low effectiveness of the transplant and the high costs, compared to the ease and effectiveness of insulin injection therapy, Most doctors DO NOT recommend pancreas transplant for patients except Type 1 patiens who are severely ill with ADDITIONAL "co-morbid" life-threatening problems.

IF you are recommend for a transplant, your insurance will pay for it. At the present itme, expect a cost from $400,000 to $800,000. But after insurance coverage, YOU can expect to pay somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 from your own pocket.

YOU cannot just walk in to a hospital and say, "I want a transplant" -- You MUST be referred to a transplant specialist by your current doctor. Speak to your current doctor concerning the possibility of a transplant.

ALL transplants are coordinated through the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS):
www.unos.org
These are the people who mange "The List" of potential recipients, They work with various state organizations to locate donors and help recipients. Note that "time on the list" is not the SOLE factor in deciding who gets a transplant. "Tissue matching" is the PRIMARY concern, along with time on the list, age, and general overall health

Maryann:
you have been mis-informed. Ultrase is designed for patients whose pancreas is IMPAIRED. Ultrase does not help the producion of insulin, but provides OTHER digestive enzymes missing when the pancreas is not working properly. Ultrase is commonly used for treatment of PANCREATITIS, NOT Diabetes.

Since Ultrase does not help insulin production, it is NOT ACCEPTABLE for Type 1 Diabetics.

My brother has type 2 diabetes and his pancreas no longer functions at all, they just came out with pills that he takes before each meal. its called ultrace. You can check this out if it sounds like a viable option for you. good luck to you.
