How do I know if I have swollen tonsils, what should I do?!

Question: How do I know if I have swollen tonsils, what should I do?
It hurts when I swallow and feels like barely anything can get down my throat, and it also hurts when I yawn, I just got over the longest cold I've ever had and yesterday I was kind of coughing stuff up.

Also, if I have it what do I do? Would I have to go to the doctor to have them take them out or is there some home remedy I can try to make the swelling go down?

Hi there. Sorry to hear you have been poorly. You could try gargling salt water. And take some pain killers to ease the pain. Do salt water every few hours. Also honey and lemon in boiled water work really well. Slice some lemon. Boil some water place in cup add lemon and honey then drink when its cooled. Hope you feel better soon.

sounds like tonsil. It eases off eventually, but if they are infected then you might need some anti-biotics. Leave it 3 days and if its not getting any better or gets worse then go to the doctor. In the meantime easing it off with painkillers ( aspirin disolved in a hot drink of lemon and honey , one lemon to 1 tablespoon honey in a cup of hot water is my favourite) will work. Not being able to swallow is a problem if you can't manage liquids If so then use a straw - that helps to swallow as you aren't bending your throat and you get smaller bits. Food may prove impossible , but mashed potato with melted cheese might go down, or pasta can work. Nothing you really have to chew.

Doctors don't take your tonsils out unless you get this sort of thing a lot f times.

touch them smoothly, if they'r swollen you will feel them as bulged and they move under your fingers ...

honey+lemon (as natasha said ) is good as it sooth,s the throat,

if the pain and discharge doesnt resolve on its own after a couple of days you should rule out throat infection, as if that was the case you then need antibiotics

a complete blood count, WBC(differential count),throat culture could rule out throat infection,
if thats the case your doctor will prescribe you antibioticsc
