Is hives and swelling anaphylaxis?!

Question: Is hives and swelling anaphylaxis?
When i was stung on the lip by a large yellow jacket when i was 5, my face swelled up and i got a few hives on my back. I never had any breathing problems, swollen tounge, or drop in blood pressure. Is this still anaphylaxis or just a reaction? also is there a difference between anaphylaxtic shock and anaphylaxis or are they the same thing. I need to know this because a reliable history of anaphylaxis is disqualifing from the military.

Answers:

You weren't in anaphylactic shock. You were having a response to the wasp sting, I don't expect you would have reacted that way if it had stung you on you leg or arm. Anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock are the same things. I don't imagine you would be disqualified from military service for this.

But it's important for you to know if you've been wasp stung since then. Often the first reaction, while exaggerated, isn't the worst. Your body develops an allergy to the foreign protiens in the venom and a second sting might be worse.

I worked as a nurse for a zillion years.
