vomiting and diabetic?!

Question: Vomiting and diabetic?
I need some help..I have been vomiting all day so far and not sure what to do anymore. I havent vomited since I was 5yrs old so I have never run into this issue while I have lived alone, I am now 21 and should know what to do from all the diabetes instruction i have had through out my life but who knows.... I am not sick as I have no other symptoms of anything. No fever just vomiting. Need advice on what to do. My doctors office is closed... I injected 6 units of insulin this morning and nothing else since i have been unable to eat, my insulin doses are on a sliding scale based off my sugar level as I do each time. Any ideas on what I should do?
I do have full coverage health insurance but there is no one but my dog here with me, if any of that helps. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do?

I was in the same situation when I was about 21 - I hadn't been sick since being diagnosed with diabetes. I phoned out the out of hour dr - he said not to take any insulin if I didn't eat, then I wasn't happy with what he said so I phoned another dr - he said the same. By 3pm the next afternoon I was being taken to a&e in an ambulance and nearly died! You need to keep on testing your blood sugar and keetones - any sign of keetones you need to be taking insulin. If you can keep fluids down then drink sugary water or a sugary juice. If you can't even keep fluids down then you should just go in to a&e, esp because you are on your own - if it hadn't been for my flat mate I'd have died that time. They'll put you on a drip - it's anoying being in hospital but it's better than dying! I'd just take a taxi right there right now - pack a bag and take some hypo sweets and keep them hidden from the nurses!! Last time I went into hospital they weren't v helpful when I was hypo. Another helpful thing is to ask them to contact the diabetes team when you arrive. Hospital sucks but it sounds like you really need to go. Hope you feel better soon xxxx

Try eating something different, like toast or soup. Diabetics get sick just like the 'others'. If you keep puking, you will eventually go hypo. Try some fruit juice or ginger ale to keep you from going hypo. Ginger ale is very puke resistant.

There is always a doctor on call for your doctor.
Stop eating. Your tummy needs rest. You haven't mentioned your sugars . Check them each hour you are awake.
You can sip on a regular soda if you need carbs.

Have you been checking your blood sugars? Let me tell you what happened to me recently with vomiting. I have had diabetes (type I - insulin dependent all those years) over 25 years now and never had an episode of keto-acidosis. So when I started vomiting, I didn't know (in my case) that is what it was. If blood sugars have been over 240 for more than a day, it's possible this is what it could be, and it can get out of hand quickly. I am on a pump, and my pump malfunctioned, but I didn't know it. When I checked my blood it was high, so I made the correction with my insulin. 2 hrs later, I'd check, still high? Make another correction and wait 2 hours. Pretty soon, I was badly acidotic. I had to go to hospital because I let it go on more than a day (no one was around for me either). I was trying to handle it on my own. I suggest check your blood sugars often today and see what they are running. If they are high, it could be you are acidotic and you do need to go to a doctor. I was hospitalized 3 days in ICU. The longer you remain acidotic, the longer it takes to get it out of your blood.

Are you feeling nauseous at all? Could it be the flu or is there something different about this situation you haven't mentioned? If it is the flu, you should still be checking blood sugars often to see what is happening with your blood. Sometimes, blood sugars run higher when you are sick, your body's reaction to being sick (in my case, I see a rise in my blood sugars a day or two before I feel symptoms...a great indicator I'm about to come down with something). Keep hydrated, most important. Keep juice close by if you are afraid your blood sugars will go too low. At any rate, call your doctor early as you can tomorrow morning and give them the scenario. They will ask your doctor what you should do and call you back with a plan. Good luck!
