Can having a runny nose for a prolonged amount of time cause you to vomit up muc!

Question: Can having a runny nose for a prolonged amount of time cause you to vomit up mucus?
My 16 month old has had a little cold for a couple weeks..just a very snotty nose. He is also teething. No fever. No signs of sickness today at all. We went for a drive to the park and got out at the lake, but on the way home he vomited in the backseat. we pulled over and wiped him up and took his shirt off. A little ways down the road he did it again just not as much. I got out and wiped him up again. It just looked like straight up snot. Sorry to be gross LOL! but its true. weve been home for almost 2 hours now and i bathed him..he has not thrown up again. he drank a little sprite and ate some crackers and is playing fine. Could this have been carsickness or from the mucus? This is the first time he has thrown up so far and it just had me a little concerned. Thanks!! :)

It could be either one. If he has had a cold for more than a week, it may actually be a sinus infection. I thought my 16 month old daughter just had a cold for 3 weeks. The doctor said that colds don't last that long. He put her on an antibiotic and she hasn't had a runny rose since. It has been about a month.

The mucus travels down the back of the throat, so throwing up may have been his bodies way of getting rid of it, since he isn't old enough to hack it out in the sink or wherever.

Also, if he is sick, sometimes kids develop a lactose intolerance with all milk products, so if he threw up right after having milk, that could be why.

Yes, if he swallowed enough of it, it can and often does cause one to vomit. If the vomiting has stopped, and like you say there is no fever, he will likely be fine. If a fever or diarrhea starts or more vomiting then you should see his doctor.

Yes, it sounds completely plausable that he's got a post nasal drip. Babies tend to swallow it. With a combination of the car ride his tummy got upset. Of course, if it continues to happen you'd want to call his pediatrician.
