They do keep them behind the counter because of shoplifters, but you should be able to go get a starter kit. That consists of the meter, a vial or two of test strips and the lancet with points. The Relyon brand at WalMart is the least expensive and is complete.

But why do you think you should go sneaking behind your mother's back to get one? If you think you have a problem talk to her. Mothers do not bite or eat their young.

There is no reason for them not to sell them to you but it can be expensive. Some companies will give you a free meter to keep you coming back to buy their lancets. I would advice asking about whatever problem your having that you think you need a glucometer for. There may be less expensive ways to find out what you want to know.
