Is hydrocodone (found in vicadin) an effective cough suppressant?!

Question: Is hydrocodone (found in vicadin) an effective cough suppressant?
Would a doctor prescribe vicadin specifically for cough suppressant?

Sounds to me like that would be very odd....But I have a terrible cough (smoked from 16-21) and I am currently 26 but my cough has never gone away. I am pretty sure I will have a smokers cough for the rest of my life.

Anyways, I was prescribed vicadin for an injury I sustained a few weeks ago and was looking into all the ingredients. Apparently hydrocodone is a cough suppressant that also relieves mild to severe pain.

So what will it do for my cough? Will I just not have the urge to cough while on it? Or is it possible that it will CURE my smokers cough (which I highly doubt)...

Answers:

Yes, Vicodin is indicated as an antitussive. It suppresses the cough center in the medulla, which should help to reduce your urge to cough while you are taking it. It is unlikely a doctor would prescribe it just as an antitussive, however. There are other options which have less side effects and less potential for abuse.
