Does Vitamin A Stunt growth?!

Question: Does Vitamin A Stunt growth?
I know that Accutane is made up of vitamin a and that a possible side effect of it is stunted growth. I though that taking vitamin a supplements would be safer for acne. Can taking regular vitamin a stunt growth as well?

Answers:

Accutane is just one part of vitamin A, which is some 350 different parts. Yes, the side effect they don't tell you about is stopping growth. In a particularly nasty way by stopping the growth of long bones. Your head and feet finish growing by 14, but if you are male, your legs and arms can continue to grow until you are 22.
Vitamin A in vast amounts, we are talking 50,000IU per day would have the same effect. It's called hypervitaminosis, and the early North Pole explorers ate seal liver and suffered from this.
You can improve acne by taking vitamin A, but at the rate of 5,000IU for every 10kilos you weigh to a maximum of 35,000 IU. This is happening as a side effect of my experiments into dyshidrosis. It is less harmful (as far as we can see) and less dramatically effective than Accutane. I, having read about Accutane, would never have taken it. I was blessed with good skin as a teenager. (Freckles, no spots). SorryLOL.
The Recommended Daily Intake for vit A is 5.000IU. Enough for health, and your body uses it in many different places, but not enough for a medication effect. If you are prepared to wait for the results, the effect of taking slightly more vitamin A will over a longer time equal accutane, I believe, and be much cheaper! Please go to yahoogroups Dyshidrosis to continue this discussion. I have some early medical papers on this that you might like to read, since you have obviously given the matter some thought.

I am a podiatrist studying Dyshidrosis and the retinoid effect.
