I have diabetes and the another day I went to emergency room because my sugar was on 375. When they do a lab test they found ketones in my urine, the doctor told me to follow up with my own doctor, but I dont have insurance at this time so I cannot see any doctor yet, I wonder if ketones in urine is dangerous? also i have protein and blood in my urine due my diabetis, but my kidneys working so far. How dangerous can be ketones in my urine?

Answers:

Well, Im a diabetic myself and have ended up in hospital 3 times with ketones, but when I had them I was also vomiting. ketones can be a very serious thing, so watch out big time, but you can easily get them down by yourself if they are not too high already. I suggest you try to get them down by giving yourself extra insulin before they reach a critical state. It's always better to be safe than sorry :) please be careful! Ending up in hospital with high ketones is the worst feeling in the world and if not treated when critical, could take a turn for the worst.

Diabetic :)

Large ketones? Small ketones? What level? Large ketones is Very dangerous and you should not have been let out of the hospital until that was resolved. You can buy ketone test strips at any pharmacy without a prescription. Test yourself and if the result is large ketones, then you have to go back to the hospital.

Ketones in your urine is a danger sign.
Protein in your urine is NOT good. It means that your kidneys are working too hard. It could result in kidney failure.
Check your diet. Do you eat too much protein? Follow with your doctor and a nutritionistt to get you back on a proper diet.

Every time I go to the doctor to have my urine tested, I have ketones present. The reason is that I am on a low-carbohydrate diet. When you are on this type of diet, your body switches over from a glucose-burning metabolism to a fat-burning metabolism. Ketones are a byproduct of this and this process is known as ketosis. Ketones can be perfectly safe, even in a diabetic. The *reason* you have ketones in your urine is important, as well as the concentration.

Ketones can also occur from a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, brought on by very high blood sugar and a lack of insulin. When you have insulin, your body can keep the level of ketones in check. When you have no insulin, ketone production escalates to incredibly dangerous levels and, coupled with high blood sugar, the result can be death. DKA is much less common in Type 2s than Type 1s because usually Type 2s produce enough natural insulin to stave off DKA.

You have high blood sugar and you have diabetic complications, which means that your blood sugar has probably been very high for a while. If you have been on a low-carbohydrate diet, that could be why you have ketones. If you are a Type 1 or a very insulin deficient Type 2, you may have ketones because you're going into or are in a state of DKA. The number of ketones in your urine matters a great deal here. People who are just in ketosis from dieting have significantly fewer ketones than people who are in DKA.

So, to sum up, the problem isn't so much ketones as it is the reason and the level of ketones in your urine. DKA is incredibly dangerous.
