Do I have HIV? I'm scared!?!

Question: Do I have HIV? I'm scared!?
Last night I got drunk and had sex with my friend who's HIV+. We didn't use protection...so does this mean I have HIV too? Please help I really don't want to have HIV!

Answers:

Go to the doctor RIGHT NOW, get prophylactic antivirals. Since you were just exposed, taking antiviral medication will decrease your chances of catching HIV. Do this NOW. Follow the doctor's recommendations for followup testing, you will probably have to go back for testing at 3 months and 6 months from now, though they might test sooner as well. In the meantime, do not have sex, and if you do, use protection. If you did catch HIV the virus will replicate rapidly at first and you will be *very* contagious, so it's important not to put others at risk.

Also you might rethink your drinking practices.

If you are certain that this person was HIV +, then it is possible for you to have contracted the virus--especially if you did not use protection. However, there is also the chance that the virus did not enter your system, and you are find. Don't go looking on line for symptoms of HIV and acute HIV--this will RUIN your life and drive you crazy (trust me--been there). Wait a few weeks (three or so), and go to the doctor. Do not have him/her run the standard test--as there is the possibility that the antibodies will not show up. Ask for the more comprehensive test--the one that actually checks to see if you have contracted the HIV virus (I believe they check for the coding of it in your RNA--or something of the like). This will likely give you a definitive answer, and you will find out sooner. Remember--try not to freak! There is a good chance that you may not have it. And even if you do--early detection is key in treating HIV. Good luck, and let this experience hopefully serve as a lesson! :)
