(Lung Question) How does a common cold affect the tidal volume and minute volume!

Question: (Lung Question) How does a common cold affect the tidal volume and minute volume of a person?
Answers:

If the common cold is causing your airways to swell up and severe narrowing, then your lungs can be hyperinflated. Think of it like breathing through a straw and it takes forever to get the air out. If your were intubated and on a mechanical ventilator, you may develop what we call autopeep. Autopeep are tidal volumes that is not empty out on every exhalation. If this autopeep gets bigger and bigger you can develop a pneumothorax. The tidal volume that is exhale will be less therefore your carbon dioxide in your blood will rise and your will go into respiratory failure. there are few ways to resolve that, one is use albuterol or steriods, two is to allow a fast inspiration and long expiration, three increase the ventilator positive pressure to match your autopeep. four decrease your ventilator tidal volume to smaller volumes.
