Why do some people have a resistance to insulin when it's something that ke!

Question: Why do some people have a resistance to insulin when it's something that keeps you alive?
Mind = blown.

My biology teacher couldn't explain it to me and I'm still curious as to what the answer is.

Answers:

It's very common for the body to turn on itself-- look at autoimmune diseases. The body's immune system is attacking an important part of the body or an organ, not recognizing it as self but thinking it is enemy tissue. People that become resistant to insulin may have desensitized the cell receptors that receive the insulin. There are many theories as to why, such as genetics, diet, overexposure to sugars/glucose, disease, etc.

It's like tolerance to a drug. The more you take, the more you need to get the same effect.

If you're constantly eating high glycemic index foods, you use a lot of insulin to process the foods, which leads to greater resistance to insulin.

A heroin addict will get high off of a small amount of the drug at first, but will gradually need more of the drug to acheive the same effect.

I was recently diagnosed with 'severe insulin resistance'.

The doctors have no idea what caused my insulin resistance. And I'm being treated by world-renowned experts in a world-renowned university hospital.

There are lots of theories about insulin resistance but medical science doesn't actually have a definite answer yet on why some people have it and what causes it.

Thankfully though my condition is well-controlled with insulin, metformin and a low-carb diet, and my average blood sugar is non-diabetic.

Insulin resistance in cells is apparently caused by frequent exposure to high levels of insulin over long time periods.
