How do I improve my posture?!

Question: Are there ways to improve my posture? I am 35 years old and kind of tall (6'3") and I have been told that I kind of hunch over a little. I guess the best way to describe it is that my head and neck kind of lean forward a little too much as opposed to being straight up. It doesnt give me any problems but I just think I could look better if it was improved. Am I too old to correct it now or are there ways to improve it?

Hi,

Yes you can improve your posture at any age.

Being a tall person in an average mans world doesn't help. The reason why many tall people 'hunch' is because you lean down to use benchtops, you slump your hips forward in cars to sit lower and you generally let your body droop a bit so as not as to appear too tall around friends and family.

You 'hunch' to get lower- after all everything is below you!

As an Osteopath I see many people for many biomechanical ailments and often posture plays a big role, and while it is a big task to correct structural congenital postural problems which may require surgery, the good news is that slight 'hunches' - particularly on tall people who have a 'slump' as a result of using stuff designed for the average sized person - posture is an easy fix that any Osteopath or Chiropractor can attend to.

Look up 'Osteopath' in your local phone book and give one a call and discuss your concerns. Or lacking that check out 'Alexander Technique' therapists who take a slightly different but equally successfully approach.

Best of luck.

The easiest way to improve your posture (providing you do not have anything causing it like scoliosis) is to imagine someone standing above you, pulling your ears straight up 24/7.
And don't slouch.

You're never too old to improve your posture. In fact, i went to the doctor recently and he told me that i should improve my posture as well. Having good posture is really important. The best way to improve it is just to sit up as straight as you can, even if it does feel weird for the first couple weeks, you'll get used to it and you wont even realize that you're sitting up straight anymore. If you do not improve it, it can result in back pain, which will just keep getting worse and worse.

The biggest thing is being aware of your posture. Anytime you think about it, make sure your posture is correct. As for knowing correct posture
