Question: because the average person needs 1200 to just stay ALIVE.

regardless of the calories being very unhealthy...would you gain weight if you only ate around 1200 cals? (unhealthy)

Your problem is that you are equating weight with health.

If you ate 1200 unhealthy calories, you would meet your basic energy requirements, but this is not the whole picture. You would be probably consuming a large amount of refined sugars and starches, which would put a large strain on your pancreas, which would struggle to cope. This would make you feel firstly a sugar high, and then later, as you come down, you would become lethargic and feel ill.

You would possibly also be eating a lot of fats, which are not good for you. Your liver would have to process these fats (not so good for you) and also, the fats you would be consuming would most likely be bad fats, like cholesterol, which form little lumps in your bloodstream and potentially cause heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems.

The unhealthy foods are also usually laced with copious amounts of salt. THis hardens your artery walls, making them inflexible, and meaning that when your blood pressure is raised, they become damaged. Over time, this would become serious.

Furthermore, most unhealthy foods are devoid of trace elements, vitamins, and fibre. Lack of fibre causes constipation and haemerrhoids, and a diet deficient in vitamins and minerals will result in other unpleasant symptoms.

There is a link between diet and acne. It isn't as simple as 'chocolate causes acne' but a poor diet, without essential nutrients, can predispose you to bad skin. Also, your breath will be more likely to stink, because your body isn't on natural food.

Your body may rebel and start storing excess calories as fat, because your diet is unhealthy. This might cause your weight to increase.

The nutritional requirements of the human body are a lot more complicated than just how much energy we consume. The better our body is running, the more efficiently it uses what you put into it.

You would put on or take off weight based on your energy expenditure. However, on a prolonged diet of crap food, you would probably develop symptoms of vitamin deficiency, and feel really unhealthy. Who cares how much you weigh when chunks of skin are peeling off your face because of a vitamin deficiency?

1200 calories is very little. Most people need around 2000 per day. So I would have to say no on that alone.

However, in addition to not getting enough vitamins and minerals you would slow down your metabolism which will cause your body to use your muscles for food not body fat. So you would actually lose weight since muscle weighs more than fat. It would also make you tired and more susceptible to illness.

Depending on your stature (and gender) 1200 calories are sufficient if they are nutritious. 1200 unhealthy calories would make you feel like you are eating but in reality you would be starving your body. Literally.
Calories are a lousy way to explain how much food you should eat, listen instead to how much nutrients are in the food that you eat. If you are eating healthy (and I mean don't eat any junk food crap at all) than you could easily eat more than 1200 calories and still loose weight (depending on how much you weigh right now). If you want to go by calories you need 100 calories for every 10 pounds that you weigh or want to weigh.
