Can I exercise with a strained back?!

Question: I'm a 22 year old male. I recently started regular strength training in the gym. I've been doing great for about 3 months, but recently I strained my back somehow.

I hadn't trained for a day or two, and I was about to go running. I ran up the stairs to my apartment, twisting in some weird way, and got a sudden pain in my upper back. I ran that day anyways, and it seemed to agravate it a little.

My back was pretty tender, achey, and stiff the next several days, especially in the morning. It's gotten much better in the past 2 days. I usually feel it in the morning and it goes away completely by the evening. It's been probably a week and a half since this happened, and I'm very eager to get back in the gym.

Is it okay for me to start training again? Maybe just cardio, like the elliptical would be okay? Or leg exercises? Or do I need to wait until it's completely gone?

I need help from someone experienced in this area!

Thanks a bunch!

back strains are tricky. i tend to have a lot of pinched nerve problems in my upper back, usually they are aggravated by weight training, but with attention to my form when lifting, and not trying to lift beyond my capabilities, i manage to keep myself from getting hurt. i also like to see the chiropractor on a regular basis. i feel this is the best thing for my back as after i get readjusted, my back pains go away a couple days after.. if you are suffering from a muscluar strain, that is different. i pulled my lower back in the gym this past summer and i was out of the gym for 2 weeks while i healed. i feel that light exercise is better than sitting around doing nothing. but i would refrain from heavy weight training until you are healed. especially if it is muscluar strain and not nerve problem.

It depends on what exercize you want to do. If it would REALLY like to, where a back thing or take care of it.

Contact a doctor

Don't do any extreme exercises that involve straining your back and neck more. Maybe just stay away from the gym for a week or so, and do some gentle stretching and muscle rebuilding exercises.

just take it easy and do little stuff man

Consult a physical tehrapist first,he will look after your strain and will prescribe you the necessary exercises....

Don't delay....
