A big problem that Americans have is with sugar, so start by cutting out on sugars(especially sodas and candy and whatnot). I have heard you can lose up to 15 pounds a year just by cutting out on soda.
Stay away from fast food and eat a lot of fruits and veggies.

It is also imperative that you exercise(cardio is key). Get your heart rate up. Get a friend to walk with you or work out with you, that way you have support and can't back out.
