proteins and fat will only build up muscles, too much muscle can make your appearance go horribly wrong, you need to have a balanced diet consisting of both carbohydrates and proteins in correct quantities. This will ensure a well toned body having strong muscles, being slim at the same time.

and be careful who you take advice from, most people in gym are ignorant amatuers, they are the same people who will advice you to take streoids.

the food items necessary are..

carbohydrates: rice, wheat, bread, rotis etc.

proteins: all pulses, beans, sprouts, milk ,cheese.

fat : butter, ghee etc.

vitamins & minerals: all fruits and vegetables.

your diet should consist of maximum carbohydrates, proteins and fruits and vegetables (including green leafy) and very little fat. also drink plenty of water. and avoid non-veg food, it is a wrong assumption that non veg food will help in muscular growth, it will only increase trans fat and cause problems for the body.

In my opinion Idly is the best south Indian food.

Forget about the food. The easiset way to build up your muscle mass is to do higher weights with less reps.

For eg. if you can do 10 reps of 15kgs then do 6 reps of 20 kgs or even less. Try this for 2 months or so and you will see the visible change in your body's composition. Just stay away from alcohol or cigarettes.
