I'd like to start weight-lifting and some advice would be welcome?!

Question: I want to start weight-lifting in my own home with barbells purchased from a Sport shop. By weight lifting I mean the deadlift, very heavy weights, not general gym weight training. Like an Olympic weight lifter: straight over-the-head stuff.

How should I get started? At present I am 22 years old, male, 5' 10" and about twelve stone (about 160lbs I think). Slim build more suited to cross-country than working with weights. I go to the gym frequently only to circuit train and have little experience of lifting heavy weights over my head.

Please help a beginner- thanks!

I think that initially you are asking for trouble training at home with very heavy weights and not much experience mate.

You have said that you go to a gym frequently, I think this would be the best place to start. Find yourself an Instructor who knows what they are talking about.

The deadlift isn't even an over the head exercise. You must mean a clean and press or similar. This is basically a few exercises made into one, so therefore you would benefit from perfecting the individual exercises first before progressing onto the whole compound movement. Work on some squats, deadlifts, shoulder presses etc to help get good technique first.

In terms of bulking up compound exercises are most beneficial (compound meaning it crosses 2 or more joints, or basically works lots of muscles in one exercise). Try to inlclude a variety of these and not just one exercise. If possible try to find a training partner who is fairly clued up and train with them for a few sessions.

There's a "Weight-lifting for Dummies" book that my husband swears by. Maybe check that out.

Start off with light weights and focus on technique, and breathing. The worst thing you can do is to try to lift too much weight and just getting it all wrong, this will just result in zero progress.

Before starting anything, i would strongly suggest you to meet a physio . Take some phsical tests and ensure that the new activity u are gonna indulge in is gonna bring you only goodies and no harm to you.
once you make that clear, then the world is yours. you can go ahead and do any crazy thing

Best advice, but not the best..... always stretch before you lift or do anything. Trust me

Go to a registered gym that specialises in weight lifting. You will then be taught correctly how to do it and how to progress the weights. Done incorrectly you could end up with permanent muscle, tendon and skeletal damage.
Have a happy and blessed Christmas.
