It really depends if you are going to make the most out of it. Im paying $20 a week for a gym membership, but havent been in like 2 months cause of year 12 exams and stuff...wasted money!
Sometimes it is hard to motivate yourself to go, however once you are there, you feel fine.

not needed unless u are lazy or obese.
other activities like rope skipping can do the job at home.

A gym is only motivating as long as you have a reason. If you have friends that go there also, you can make it a routine. Find a gym that doesn't require a contract. My old gym would fill up for the first 3 months of every new year then dwindle down to nothing come november, december again. At 700+ dollars a pop thoes poor suckers were screwed!! (could only sign up with a contract, thats where they make all the money)

no need if u will not go regularly..
joining gym made wonders on me
made body changed greatly..without too intensive training for only one month i lost 17 lbs easily..
if u have problems with your body it can make on you too
but only if u visit it regularly..
then it will be price worthy

It's not so important where you exercise, but the type of exercise is important. The best exercise is the kind that our bodies evolved to do. Tens of thousands of years ago, our evolutionary ancestors had to get up and go walking each day to find their food. The best exercise for us is what matches our evolutionary history, in other words, walking. Specifically, walking before each meal, and the meals should be mostly natural (fresh, raw) fruits and vegetables. That's why most successful diet programs include a combination of physical activity and a high-fiber diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. That's the way we evolved, and it's still the way that works best for us now.

I actually belong to 3 different gyms. 2 large franchise chains and 1 privately owned gym. Each one has something different that I like that keeps me going in, even when I don't feel like it.

If you are a person that needs variety then the gym is good for that because you can do cardio, machines, free weights and lots of them have classes you can take like step or kickboxing (my favorite). I get bored easily so a gym is a must for me...it also removes my "excuses" like rain, snow and safety. I still have to hold myself ACCOUNTABLE for going and that's where a lot of people go wrong.

I actually go in the morning before work and directly after work because if I don't, I won't go...I'll get home and make an excuse that I am too busy.

If you can do it at home and don't mind being inventive with your workouts, don't bother with a membership to a gym. I happen to enjoy being around people who want to work out and I have made some good friends...minus the Jan-March newbies at the gym who you never see after April...a shame.

Good for you for taking an interest. I couldn't do it without a gym but some people can. Good luck!

By the way, although it's expensive, to keep myself going to the gym, I hired a personal trainer for a few sessions to show me things...I got such good results I still have 1~ 3 years later. At this gym I have to pay seperately for his services but there are some gyms where it's included in the fee...make sure you check out all of your options. Also, if you like the classes lke step, boxing or hip/hop dance or yoga, many times you can find local places that offer a set of 8-10 or a months worth for a reasonable fee...no gym membership but you still get a workout...in my area it's jazzercise, dance academy and various martial arts studios...I just search online or in the phonebook...
