Losing weight...?!

Question: I am 18, 5'2 and i weigh 150. I had a knee surgery last year which caused me to put on most of this extra weight as I could barely walk for about 6 months. Is cycling at the gym almost every day enough to lose weight? I have been cycling for about 30 minutes, heart rate around 140 (so says the machine), and usually about 7-8 miles. Running is hard on my knee.. Should I be doing machines as well or should I wait until the extra weight is gone? How many calories should I be eating everyday in order to lose weight as quickly as possibly in a healthy way? Any tips are appreciated.

I would try to increase your cycling time and intensity so it makes you sweat and feel like you worked out hard and keep increasing until about an hour or so if you can do it, but if you cannot, just try as hard as you can. Also, you should be lifting because it will help you get toned and muscle helps metabolize fat quicker.

You should probably consume 1400 calories a day if you work out that much. Also, remember to eat a balanced diet and stay hydrated.

depending on how quickly you want to lose weight you could take a number of approaches. i suggest you continue the exercise (great job!) and try to keep your caloric intake under 2000 each day, the lower the better as long as you are getting the nutrients you need. you may want to try meal replacement bars and shakes for lunch (it's hard for the body to replace meals as important as breakfast and dinner). you may need extra calories in order to sustain such a rigorous work out though if so, just make sure you aren't taking in extra calories from fat.

always be sure to check with your doctor or a health professional though, as many people on the internet (such as myself) are not really qualified to give health advice.

also, i would try swimming, running through water, or other aquatic exercises if possible.... it's a great way to burn calories/fat and would be really easy on your knee. these techniques are often used for rehab and geriatric conditioning.
