Please only answer this if you know alot about Diet & Fitness...?!

Question: I am 13 years old, I weight 56kg (123.2lbs) and 5'3' if that helps with my question.

My question is If I have less than 1200 calories a day do I still burn off the calories I did eat? And I have to eat under 1200 calories a day, doctor said.

For example, Today I have eaten: 692 calories and have burnt 250 calories, so my question is If I eat under 1200 calories a day do I still have to burn off the food I did eat? I am trying to burn 3500 calories this week so I can lose some weight.

If you want have any questions I will post the answers in additional details.

To those who answered, many people have already told her that she is doing things to screw up her metabolism and is actually damaging her body by the choices she is making. This is not her first question or topic regarding her weight, diet, and exercise.

What we are seeing is the development of an eating disorder. This is how it begins. She is overly concerned with her body image and is making drastic, dangerous, and unintelligent choices to attempt to lose weight rapidly. At the rate she is going, her poor self-image will be so deeply ingrained and her eating disorder will be so pervasive that help will be difficult, expensive, and likely to fail. Right now she easily qualifies for "body dysmorphic disorder." If she doesn't already have bulimia or anorexia, those will be soon to follow within the next few years of her young life.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but I have been reading and tracking her degenerative process for a while now and no matter how many people tell her to stop what she is doing, she doesn't stop. The only answers she is interested in hearing are those which support her disorder.

STOP.

You are young. You are at an incredibly healthy weight, and when I say healthy I mean thin and healthy. No doctor in their right mind would ever tell you to eat under 1200 calories a day. If you eat under 1200 calories a day your body systems slow down, will eventually shut down, and will start eating your organs for energy. You won't have any enzymes to burn fat because you're not eating enough and skeletal muscle is too difficult to burn.

Please, please stop. If you don't, you'll just kill your metabolism and 10 years from now your body will be in a world of hurt.

If you eat under 1200 calories in a day, your body will hold on to ALL of it. It'll just slow down because you're not giving it enough. It doesn't have to keep burning what it typically burns. It'll adjust to save you, so it can decide against your will to burn less and stash everything you give it. Trust me.

Your base metabolic rate, what your body would naturally burn should you just lay in bed all day, is likely higher than 1200 especially because you're so young. It's not even eating less than 1200, though eating less than 1200 calories will DEFINITELY hurt you. It's eating less than your BMR that will hurt you. Eat less than that, and you're just slowing yourself down. You might lose some weight now, but it'll stop and then you'll be left with a broken metabolism and from what I can see, an eating disorder that will torture you for years.

Please quit while you're ahead. Provided you're being honest about what your doctor said, find a new doctor. I can't beg you enough. Please. Please. Please.

If you burn more calories than you consume, you WILL lose weight.

How do you know that you burned 250 calories on the day you ate 692?

Make sure you eat a healthy breakfast EVERY DAY. If you omit breakfast you will slow your metabolic rate down so that you stop burning off fat. Also, when you finally DO eat, the calories will be STORED!!! When you eat breakfast, you rev up your metabolic rate and begin burning efficiently right away. By the time your next meal rolls around you will burn it off more efficiently too!

Engage in physical activity every day. Aim for at least 20 minutes per day.

Your doctor was ineffective if he did not discuss total lifestyle with you. He should have discussed exercise as a method to burn calories and maintain a healthy body. He should have discussed NUTRITION, not just calories. He should have taught you how to build up your muscle mass so that your body could burn calories more efficiently.

Ask your doctor to refer you to a NUTRITIONIST for tips on healthy eating. Speak with a fitness trainer for tips on maintaining a healthy, fit body.

Don't become obsessed with your body and what society tells you you should look like. Strive for being HEALTHY and everything else will fall into place. I promise!

I agree with Juliet!
Do not diet and restrict your calories.
But exerciseing is great.

you are at a fairly healthy weight, but if you and your doctor feel that you can lose some weight stick to what he said. Try to eat 1200 calories a day. The is what was recommended because that is what your body naturally burns off in a day. If you are trying to lose weight, then that is when you would do those extra exercises. if i were you i would try to lose about 7 pounds at most. since there are 3,500 calories in one pound you would multiply 3500 x 7, and come to 24,500 extra calories that you would have to burn. Now do not try to burn all of this in one day. you should never try to burn more extra calories than half of what you have eaten. If i were you i would try to lose all of this in about 6 weeks, which would mean that you would burn only 600 extra calories a day.

Note:
If you eat much less than 1200 calories a day, then you should not try to burn off any extra calories. (ex. if you skipped a meal[which i would not recommend] and then was not that hungry later in the day as you usually are and only eat 800 calories, then you would naturally burn and extra 400 from not eating enough calories, and that would be enough to be half of your eaten calories in a day.)

Juliet is so right! You should heed her advice, which is excellent.
