What muscles are suppose to be sore when doing push ups?!

Question: After I do push ups, my arms and the lower part of my abs burn / get sore. From what I understand, push ups are suppose to work the pecs so shouldn't my pecs be sore instead?

Generally, a proper push-up affects your entire upper body. The reason it's effecting your midsection is because, yes, you're doing it correctly. Proper form calls for the tightening of your body, especially your abs. Tightening your abs as much as you can and holding it for fifteen seconds is equivalent to a crunch, so imagine the time you spend tightening your abs for push ups.

As far as your arms being sore and your chest not, I would assume your chest is proportionately stronger than your arms. Meaning your arms require more strength. Once they "catch up" (build more strength) you'll be able to do more push ups, and the feel it throughout your chest as well.

You could try doing different types of push ups. Wikipedia lists a bunch of different kinds, and I'm sure google would help. Here's the Wikipedia for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_up

Of course, these are just my view points, and I'm far from a professional

That is correct...are you sure you're doing it right?

You are flexing your abs when you are doing a push up. People have soreness in different areas(pecs, triceps, abs, forearms).
