Why do all overweight people claim it's "muscle" and "big bon!

Question: No offense to obese people out there in the Yahoo! Answers community, but every fat person I know blames depression, muscle, and big bones. I mean, yes, some people do get depressed and eat, but not enough to be way overweight. And people do have muscle (extra) and big bone, but you'd notice it. I mean, this girl I know named Caryn, she blames all three of those, when you can lose depression weight easily and you never gain very much, you can TELL it isn't muscle or big bones because you see extra skin flabs or whatever, you call that muscle and big bones? And like a lot of other people I know blame that, too. I call it lazyness and other things. Sometimes heritage, but not always. And also, is this just an excuse for their self confidence?

Actually, obese people do tend to have a higher lean body mass, i.e. more muscle and bone weight. As a person gains fat, they also gain some lean body mass and so it's actually true that obese people do have heavier bones and bigger builds. But with that said, they also have excess amounts of fat on them and so they should not use the above as an excuse. It's more the case that they have both high muscle/bone mass AND high body fat. This is a typical endormoph body type.

Insecurity. Pride. Obviously.

Well, this is where you're clearly wrong. I had my bone density test done at the dr's, as well as a body fat percentage. I weigh more than most females but have lower body fat percentage (I'm thinner that means). By the way, some people who are overweight ARE "overweight" but not "overfat". There IS a difference and muscle is 22% more dense (takes up less space) than fat. If you see a lot of rolls, it's clearly not muscle or bones. I mean, come on, if a person is showing bones like there's no tomorrow and yet isn't under 100 pounds, they have larger frame as well as more muscle.

Obviously.

why does it matter? if it makes them feel better then so be it....sounds like you're a little insecure......

Not many say this and much of weight is genetic.

its both for a (valid) excuse and lies to themselves.
people are lazy like that.

because they just want to make themselves feel better about their poor state of physical and mental health. trying to make up excuses about yourself is easier than actually getting out and doing something about it. obviously its not muscle because muscle is taut and firm and by the very nature of muscle tissue people with a lot of it can't be fat. big bones aren't an excuse either as bone weight is factored into your lean body mass (bones, organs, skin, muscles) which is what you want more of and fat is just...well, FAT and its unhealthy...even toxic to have too much of. genetics is such a small part of things...80% of the way you look is because of how you eat! the other percentile is made up of things like genetics, activity level, additional exercise routines...ect. *SIGH*

The depression weight thing you mentioned did not make sense to me, as I work with people with mental illness. Major depression is a debilitating thing, not laziness, and actually, some people will gain 50 pounds on antidepressants as a side effect, despite efforts to lose weight.

Then again, some of us overweight people will say, "yup. I'm fat." and be done with it!

Most people who say this don't feel comfortable with his weight. I couldn't say it is an excuse without sounding offensive. Just agree along with them, and if it is really a problem, then tell them that they need to lose weight.

Um.....I am fat and proud of it! I also wonder why people blame everything but themselves for their size. Because it shouldn't matter what size you are you should love yourself no matter what. :D
