Is there something wrong with me? (weight)?!

Question: I'm 13 years old. I haven't eaten a cheeseburger in 4 or 5 years. I never ever have soda. I occasionally have fries but only about one time every 4 months or so. I eat around 1,200-2,000 calories a day. I don't eat meat (not because I think it's cruel but because meat tastes like dead animals). I play volleyball and basketball. I'm pretty good at basketball but I'm a benchwarmer for volleyball. I run a couple miles each week for PE and try pretty hard. I used to scooter a lot but they banned it on the Air Force Base (where I live) because they're idiots and think we'll sue them if we fall.

But the thing is that I'm chubby and I don't know why. I used to be fairly normal sized, maybe even lighter than most normal people. I just started gaining a lot of weight as I hit puberty. I'm wondering if anyone thinks it's hormones?

You may not be getting enough protein. Do you eat eggs and drink milk? Also, many people do not know this, but a low fat diet slows your metabolism down. The mitochondria in our cells need fat to burn off calories. A high fat diet is not good since the extra fat ends up being stored. The best diet has a medium amount of fat in it. Most doctors and dietitians do not realize this. The best diet is high protein, medium fat and low carbohydrates.

If is possible that you may have a hormonal problem. Only a doctor can order lab tests for you to find out.

sometimes it just runs in the family to gane weight uring puberty are your mom or dad over wieght if so you might of inhereted there obeceity genes.

Puberty could be the cause for weight gain, but it is most likely other factors.

Are you snacking on lots of carbohydrates? Because that will make you gain weight. Also, running a few miles a WEEK isn't going to cut it either, try at least a mile, mile and a half a day.

If you aren't eating meat, then are you substituting it with less healthy processed carbs?

Try to cut out anything processed and sugary and exercise more, you should lose weight.

There's a big difference b/w 1200 and 2000 calories a day. If you are chubby, you are quite simply taking in too many calories compared to how many you are burning. Try writing down what you eat so you can get a better idea of where those extra calories are sneaking in. Telling yourself that it's just your genes and that there's nothing you can do is setting yourself up for a life of obesity.

It could totally be hormones, or you may have a thyroid problem. Make an appointment with your general doctor and ask him/her about your concerns. They can do some simple blood tests to check for anything that might be off rhythm.

Your metabolism might be slowing a little because of hormones.

With your doctor's approval, I'd recommend the Body for Life diet by Bill Phillips. I also seemed to gain weight for no real reason, I ate fairly normal, was pretty active, etc. That diet literally changed my body and I felt so much better. Like I said though, make sure you ask your doctor if it's ok before you start it.

Also - are you SURE that you're actually chubby and not just imagining it? Please keep in mind that just because you're not 12 pounds like Nicole Richie or Paris Hilton does NOT mean you are chubby!!!

Looking and feeling healthy is what's most important!

Good luck!
