Is this unhealthy?!

Question: One of the dietary supplements I'm taking has 1000% daily value (i.e. 20 mg) of riboflavin (b-2). How could it possibly be healthy to take 1000%, if 100% is the recommended dosage?

Am I missing something? Thanks.

RDA is the usual thing quoted as the recommended dosage. It is incredibly conservative in my opinion.

The B vitamins are unusually safe, *if taken together as a group*. They are soluble in water and excess is easily excreted in the urine. [Example of a problem if taking one B vitamin alone: If you were to take folic acid alone, it could shield the symptoms of B12 deficiency. That would be a very bad thing.]

High doses of B vitamins tend to sit on the fence of healthy. The daily value is just barely enough to provide you with what you need, without considering lifestyle. Riboflavin is a water soluble vitamin, meaning it is not stored in your tissues and you eliminate any excess. It is essential for healthy skin and encourages tissue health and red blood cell production. B2 also works with the other B vitamins to energize your body. A lot of prescription medications will deplete your absorption or utilization of B2, one of the most common are birth control pills. Alcohol and cigarrettes also kill all the vitamins in your body and decrease your absorption, meaking the need for these vitamins double or triple. At the same time, the excess doses do stress your kidneys and adrenal system. Whether you need the high doses, I can not tell from the info you provided. If you are a heavy drinker/smoker, its probably helping to have such a high dose. Yet, the goal still is to eat a diet that is vitamin rich enough to not require taking any supplements. Good B2 sources include whole grains, dairy, eggs, liver, clams and mushrooms. Many products are also fortified with B2. More is not necessarily better, unless you need it. Happy Holidays and Good Health.
