Has anyone quit smoking cold turkey? any helpful pointers you could give?!

Question: Yes it was not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be!! Cold turkey is the best, if your going to do it just do it, pointless to beat around the bush ya know! I chewed nearly a pack of gum a day but it helped. You will find your niche or "replacement" as you go but avoid drinking if you do drink for the first month because the craving to smoke after a drink or two is impossible to ignore!

yea and i ate millions of sunflower seeds... as long as i kept my mouth and/or hands busy... i was ok

i have.. and i cried and cried and screamed and cried for one week. then i was fine.. ut then i broke down 3 months later.

oh, eat a lot of fruit you like. i bought a box of clemintimes and put them in my car. i ate a box in like one week. drink lots of water!

Whenever you want to start smoking again, just remind yourself why you are trying to quit.

I did, but know there is chantix or something like that, that works amazingly well!!!

I did. January 14th 2007. That was my last day. Just threw all my cigs out.

It was a little easier for me though, it was the day after my Son was born. I went home to get some stuff for my wife. I had 1 last ciggy, then through them all away.

Haven't had one since, coming up on a year soon.

I did several years ago and it was no fun. If you can, try to keep contact with family and friends to a minimum for the first three days or they will hate you. I also kept a pack of smokes in my purse because I paniced without them and would really crave. I did not smoke them.

Nicotine raises heart rate etc, and even though the strain of quitting is hard, I found about a coffee cup of caffeine to offset some of the symptoms.. But ONLY if you are healthy. Just a tip

It's more psychological than physical. You have to want to quit and when your mind is set, its easier. Lots of chewing gum!

seem like dont buy anymore in a week craving go away

Here's what worked for me ... I was determined to quit, asked for God's help (I'm not very religious) and didn't cheat ... not a drag or two ... no more cigarettes. I was edgy for about 3 days and then the desire began to fade more and more until after about 2 weeks, I hardly ever thought about smoking.

OMG! I did and I dont miss it at all. I was smoking 1-2 packs a day, one day I just decided that I was tired of coughing up brown gunk every morning and decided to quit. I didnt say I was going to quit forever, just for one hour, after I made that hour I went for another, then another, its easy when you do a little at a time, that was over 15 years ago!

I did I had smoked for 15 years and my daughter sat me down and read me her school project on some of the chemicals that are in cigarettes. Now I'm sure it was a combination of my daughter pretty much asking me to stop smoking and hearing what actually is in a cigarette...I never smoked again. They say you have to replace 1 addiction for something, so for example chew gum everytime you have a craving. My help came in the form of my 9 year old. You need to find your reason.Good luck 2 u...hope you do it.

Yes, I have quit smoking and haven't since, since I first found out I was pregnant. If you have a child who lives with you and you care about their health you would quit smoking. Besides, smoking kills everyone but slowly. If it's hard for you to stop try the gum or the patch. It really does work. Good luck to you.

well it isss possible to quite cold turkey but its extremely hard and most likely that person will get very crabby. my suggestion is to have someone talk to them about how bad it is for you and use something like the patch or gum to help. Quiting cold turkey don't work cuzz I've been trying for years to have my daddy stop butt w/ee i finally got him to by just telling him all the stuff about it and buying him nicotine gum and the patch for Christmas.

My aunt quit cold turkey. She said that it was easy. She just decided that she didn't want to smoke anymore. She thought of her health and the fact that she could harm her child. She didn't start again. She didn't understand why it is hard for people to quit.

I think that's the best way to quit.
The craving is really bad for the first week that you quit, I mean you feel nervous, sweat, get upset real easy and get a bad feeling deep in your gut. What you have to do is turn those feelings around. Instead of giving in and lighting up you say to yourself, "I feel his way because I GAVE UP SMOKING."
I remember even months after I quit, after a meal I would reach for a cigarette and when I realized what I was doing, I'd smile and say to myself, "I DON'T SMOKE ANYMORE."
What's good to do it this way if you can make it through that first week, your home free. You're not trying to quit, you do quit. Good luck
