Smoking interferes with bodybuilding?!

Question: I know that alcohol interferes with bodybuilding process.
It damages the liver, which has a bad influence on the protein anabolism. Plus, if you are taking protein supplements, alcohol also damages the kidneys by making them work excessively. But I have no idea if smoking has a similar bad influence on the process. I assume it has, but scientifically, how?

Smoking negatively affects the cardiovascular system, weaking it. Also, it impedes VO2 max and EPOC, two very important components to an intense bodybuilding regimen. It has been shown to inhibit cellular growth and nutrient uptake. Successful bodybuilders must live very clean and healthy lifestyles, more so than many other sports. That's what separates the scrawny guys from the big guys in the gym.

smoking affect the "lungs" and the "heart"
not the liver

Yes, smoking can in fact harm the liver, lungs and heart and a mess of other things. When you smoke, significant amounts of nicotine enters the system. Unfortunately, the main excretion point for this excess nicotine is through urination. If you smoke, the nicotine passes though the body and eventually makes its way to the liver and bladder. There it will pool and may cause health problems including cancer. Although not common, it does have an effect on those organs all the way through until it is excreted. The main health factors are the throat, lungs and heart. Hope this helps.

Yes smoking has a major effect. It will greatly limit how far you can go as your blood will carry much less oxygen. Smoking raises blood CO2 levels. It also limits how much air your lungs can take in. This will greatly accelerate as you age. It also affects appetite and hormone levels.
