well, i don't know about your trainer, but trainers in my gym are looking like potatoes and i doubt they can give any right advice. also i am not sure they all have proper education. anywho i have been doing bodybuilding for 9 years now and i have been reading a lot. the rule is - no matter how many reps u do u should do each one till failure. if u don't feel pumped after 10 rep - add more weight or do more reps. i find doing 12 reps less consuming time than 20 reps and results re the same. so add weight u can accomplish 10 reps and no more. good luck and happy new year. u may visit www.ironmagazine.com. they have also questions and answers page. I'd ask your trainer if I were you. The two options are to do each set to failure, or to increase the weight by a couple of pounds. If you're looking to build mass, the "failure" approach would be better. If simple toning/defining is what you're aiming at, the SLIGHT increase in weight is your goal. HOWEVER, which one will work best (and safest) for you is beyond me. You should ask your trainer what he/she thinks.

Don't worry about him/her charging you for the advice on this. Simply walk up to them in your gym and say "i have a little question for you."

I've done this with my own trainer SEVERAL times, and never has she given me a problem. Your trainer is there to help you, and certainly doesn't want to sour your image of them if they were to snap at you about not being "on the clock" with them.
Give it a try, and I'm 100% certain they'll tell you which way would be better for you.
