I want to do cardio first thing in the morning, should i eat before or after tra!

Question: Before, at least an hour to account for gastric emptying. For one, you don't want to exercise in the highly catabolic state you're in from sleep, this will send your body further into catabolism (eating muscle but retaining bodyfat). Also, you can't exercise at full intensity if you haven't eaten.

Some people are under the mistaken impression that if you don't have something on your stomach and you do cardio, you burn bodyfat since your body doesn't have glycogen stores to utilize for energy. This is simply untrue and has no science behind it. The goal of exercise for fat loss should always be to raise the metabolic rate, not just burning "x" number of calories. Raising the metabolism is key for true fat loss. If you exercise at a high enough level of intensity to actually raise the metabolic rate after exercise, that's when real fat loss occurs. This is due to the fact that at rest the body utilizes free form fatty acids for energy, so the higher the metabolism, the more calories are burned from these free form fatty acids.

Edit:

Just because you lose weight doesn't mean it's good weight. For true fat loss, you have to work on raising the metabolism. I doubt the poster below me knows what their bodyfat percentage is. It's true you don't necessarily want to gorge yourself immediately before exercising, but you DON'T want to go out on an empty stomach. This is the same mindset of starving yourself to lose weight, the physiology is essentially the same.

i was watching doctor oz on oprah and he suggested not eating before but if you just have to eat something veryy low in fat like fruit or yogurt!!

good luck :)

before it will help speed up the metablolism

I would suggest at least a small breakfast to give you some energy, an empty stomach wont let you go 100%.

light snack before so your body dont start to think your starving and put you in starvation mode. Feed yourself a little fuel before a work out.

AFTER AFTER AFTER!!! you don't want to be doing cardio on a full stomach ESPECIALLY in the morning, it increases the risk of throwing up all over the place, plus it's better for the metabolism if you eat RIGHT AWAY after you do your cardio. good luck!

just a little edit: i ate afterwards doing cardio, and I've lost 50 pounds in the last 12 months, so I speak from experience :)
