Hello there.

Firstly, can I just say that I'm very impressed with what you have said so far, for the reason you understand that how things are going, it really isn't good for you. First step well and truly taken!

As you've also said, your family are similar in eating habits - this is a very normal thing to happen - especially when others are buying food for you. I use to have the same problem when I lived with my family... it is indeed very hard to break away from the 'norm' that surrounds you.

You have a habit and just like smokers whom try and give up their habit, it IS hard work, there is no two ways about it. ave you spoken to the rest of your family about this? Have you let them know that you are not happy about the situation? I strongly urge you to (if not already done) communicate your feelings to your family - just how you've described here!

What about if they do not listen to you? How about they continue buying you food? You need to bring... how can I put this... you need to put your foot down. I don't mean being a total *** to them, I just mean that the next time they buy you something that you didn't really want and you have already communicated tot hem not to do so, then this is the time you need to be a bit more harsh on them. Be strong - resist the temptation once and you will find resisting in the future much easier.

Your family can also make it easier on you if they also take on the same approach as YOU, but don't force them as 9/10 times it can very well make them stronger in their own urges.

Now, as for snacks that you get for yourself... I *still* have the problem and I still eat chocolate etc, so I'm not saying go cold turkey - that is infact the wrong thing to do as you'll end up going back to it. I just suggest getting some fruit... hopefully you like 1 or two forms of fruit - get some in. When you fill the urge to eat for the sake of it.... fine, the choc bars or whatever unhealthy snack you have are still there, but try eating the fruit FIRST. After this, you may start to realise that you do not need to have just unhealthy snacks.

Obviously, it goes without saying - but how are your main meals in the day? If you eat properly at set meal times, this should also ween you off of random snacking.

Also and lastly, get in some regular exercise. If you do nothing at the moment - just a 30 minute brisk walk a day will do you wonders!!! Then, pick it up from there 0 go further for longer. Of course, you shouldn't just set out to do 1 thing, swap it around from doing cardio (walking, swimming, running) to tone training - working on abs, arms etc - this way, you will hopefully not get bored - and more importantly, alternating from toning exercises to cardio on a day to day basis ensures you do not overwork a certain muscle group.

Hmmm.... hope that helps, that's all I can think of right now from my personal experiences.

Best of luck!
John

You are in a tough situation. Talk to your family and tell them you need to control your weight and need their help. You need to cut 3500 calories from your diet to lose one pound. If you exercise and keeping eating you defeat the process. You have the same problem over 60% of America has.

That is a really tough situation...I usually tell people to just not buy it, but when you have others buying it for you, it changes everything. You could ask your mum to buy healthier snack choices for you, such as Baked chips, high-fiber granola bars, fruit, and low-fat yogurt. That may be easier than trying to get the whole family on the healthy life-style bandwagon.

If you can't get them to stop buying it, ask if they could store it in a place where you can't find it. Out of site, out of mind..it's easier to avoid it if it's not staring you in the face.
Just keep that resolution...Know that it's much easier to lose the weight now, then when you're older and heavier. You can do this!

You need to control your portions of snacks. It is very hard to trade chips for celery sticks! Try to drink a glass of water before you eat any thing. It will help to fill you up and you won't be so tempted to eat 1/2 the bag of chips. Ideally you should trade all your junk snacks for healthy alternatives. Even eating celery and carrot sticks dipped in a low fat dressing is a step in the right direction. Apple slices with peanut butter, celery with peanut butter and raisins, cottage cheese with fruit are just some examples. You still get the sweetness you crave but you are eating healthier. Exercise everyday. Go for a 1/2 walk or run. You are right in thinking you are only going to get heavier if you don't do something about it now. Good for you for recognizing it.
