Puberty occurs at different times for different people. We only perceive "averages" because so many people share a common time of when they hit puberty. Hitting puberty "early" or "late" still has the same mental ramifications for the person because of our social expectations.
Most males can continue to grow well into their twenties because they tend to hit puberty at a later time than girls. It's not unusual.

i grew 2 inches when I was 18. my driver's license, obtained when I was 16, still has my height as only 5'0. but as I got older, i learned more about nutrition and started to eat better, drink more milk, etc. and low and behold, during my pre-college physical, my doctor was shocked to see that I grew 2 inches to be 5'2. I guess now at 36, I can look forward to losing height!

I was 5'2 when I graduated for high school and am now 5'6 and my three brothers were under 6 foot at 18 but are all now over 6'2..are genes are just like that. I think after about 24 though everyone is done growing because their growth plates have closed.

According to medical science you should stop growing when you're finished puberty, but I kept growing. I was just under 5'3" from the age of 16 until about 25. Then I hit 5'3", and at my last physical I was over 5'4". I'm now 28. I always get measured at the same time of day, and it's never with shoes on so I can't explain it.
