Are salads mostly carbohydrates? Someone told me this and I disagreed.?!


Question: Lettuce is made mostly of water. No carbohydrates--and if there are carbs..there are VERY little.

However, what you ADD to your salad could cause you to intake a LOT of carbs.
-Croutons
-Loading it with dressing!
-Bacon Bits

No they aren't. I'm on the atkins phase 1 and can only have 20 carbs a day for 2 weeks. You can't have everything in regular salads though. It's what you put in it. Like if you put nuts in it thats carbs. If you put a tomatoes in it thats carbs. But if you just have the lettuce cucumber and a little salad dressing thats low in carbs.

Potato and macaroni salads are. A salad of greens with no dressing (or some no-carb concoction) has no carbs.

not unless you add all the bad stuff. dressing, eggs, croutons...

if you make a salad of lettuce and add very low carb items, like chicken, eggs, almonds, green veggies-cucumbers, green peppers, it will be very low carb. Now, if you add lots of croutons or other high carb toppings, then the carb count will go up. Watch the dressing too, low fat dressings often have more carbs than regular dressing.
