Am I overweight or obese?!

Question: I did a BMI test on this website http://www.bmi-calculator.net
they told me my BMI is "29.28." which falls into overweight [between 25 and 29.9]. Then it suggested I do a body fat calculation, which gave me a result of 32.16% which puts me in the obese!? catergory. [which is anything over 32%]. And my hip to waist ratio is 1.08% which is up the high end too.

I'm 21 years old. Female. I weigh 155 lbs. I'm 5"1. My waist circumference is just a bit over 38 inches. Would I be considered overweight or obese? I know I could probably find out if I visited my doctor but when you're overweight it's a bit embarassing getting assessed by someone.

Actually, there is no definite consensus between scientists as to what body fat percentage constitutes obesity. The truth is they don't know for certain because there are not enough long term studies on the effects of different body fat percentages.

However with studies that compared body mass index and body fat percentage, the average female with a BMI of 30 had a body fat percentage of around 35%, which says to me that obesity should be 35% body fat, not 32%. Otherwise the BMI cutt off would need to be lowered.

However 32% body fat would still be considered 'overfat' for a female and a waist measurement of 38 is also too much for a 5ft1 female.

YOU ARE NOT OBESE you may be a little overweight, but I don't know you. My dads a dr so he said that it dependes on how tall you are and not your age.

I am so sorry to say so, but you are about 50 lbs. overweight, but that's to get to your ideal weight, so really you could get by with losing maybe just 35 lbs. Now, don't worry yourself by calling yourself obese, that is out of the question! I know that you can easily lose this weight, I personally recommend Weight Watchers, but like you said, if you have trouble talking about this in person, it's best to do the online version, and it's really good. Good luck and don't worry yourself with this, it happens to the best of us at some points in our lives!

I wouldn't be worried about what a machine is telling you. I'd be more concerned that being over weight or obese puts you in risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Which can be deadly in the long term. The best way to lose wait is to eat a smaller lunch and a smaller dinner. And plenty of walking. Not to mention if you walk instead of taking the car you'll be helping the environment

Does it really matter? It seems to me that you're splitting hairs. Are you saying you'd do something about it if you're obese, but if you're just overweight that's fine with you? Either way I'd think you'd want to change it.

BMI index between 19 - 25 is consider normal .You lie in the next slot ,which means you are over weight.Women do tend to have a large amount of fat.Its Natural. You should see that
BMI is common for both men and women but Body fat is not so i say Ignore the Body fat calculation and go for BMI.

BMI is a bunch of crap. Your skeletal build, and muscular composition- there is no way anyone can say being 5'1 is obese without seeing you. You should be able to see for yourself in the mirror if you are or not.

I don't think you're obese, but you are overweight and I think you should be concerned. They also say that waist circumference can be a better predictor of health compared to BMI and 38 inches is above what is healthy therefore putting you at risk for diabetes, hypertension and other health risks. And I hate to say this but it may be a good idea to be tested for diabetes as it is common in overweight people.
