Can anti-depression medication from a psychiatrist help me stop overeating/bingi!

Question: yes it will help stop you from overeating because antidepressants will make you feel better about your self, and start taking better care of yourself. i am on effexor xr and before starting the meds i would sit around all day and eat because i didnt care what i looked like, but when i started the meds it took about 2 weeks for me to start feeling better about myself. most people who eat all day long are emotional eaters and they think it will make them feel better if they eat

I'll tell you this, and I live by it.

Anti-depressants only MASK the problem. It's a cold, hard fact. They will work, but once you decide to come off them the problems will arise again. Not to mention, anti-depressants change your personality.

I suggest you find a diversion tactic. What I mean by that is this: when you feel like you want to eat, or even nibble on something, immediately choose something else to do and go do it. Read a book, dance around. Anything to keep your mind occupied.

Have you ever done something, and realized that you'd forgotten about everything else? Well you need to find something that keeps you THAT occupied.

You need to re-train your subconscious mind to form new habits, and kick this troublesome one.

Writing a daily schedule is also helpful. If you can take a mental note of it, do so. Something like this:

Wake up at 6
Shower
Eat breakfast, but only a set amount
Go to work, or whatever it is that you do
Have lunch, but again a SET amount
Back to work, or "" "" "" ""
Go home
Have dinner

Do NOT have snacks in between meals. This will only keep your mind occupied on food. Make sure you eat enough to keep you going until the next of the three meals.

Good luck, and I hope this helped.

PS. I cannot stress this enough. Do NOT take anti-depressants. They are something you'll wish you'd never taken. This is a problem that you need to fix yourself, and it's not as hard as it might seem! Taking them is like putting a picture over a hole in the wall. It will look nice until the day you sell your house, and realize the hole is still there!

No, binge eating is more of an emotional issue. Figure out why you binge and what are the triggers. Some people approach binge eating the same way you would approach binge drinking. You're "stuffing" some feeling or emotion down. What it is and why need to be dealt with.

Be aware that some anti-depressants can cause you to gain weight. Talk to your doctor and maybe check into a program like OA.
Good luck.

Depends on the medication. Some of them have appetite suppressants in them - Wellbutrin for example has an appetite suppressant. But be aware that once you go off the mediation the weight WILL come back. If you're someone who constantly grazes during the day, maybe change the food you have around the house.. get rid of any junk food.. that way if you want to eat something, it'll be something healthy at least. Or tell yourself that you can eat something small every 90 minutes or so.. but it has to be something healthy.
