Bread Healthy?!

Question: I was wondering if we (humans) are supposed to have bread everyday, i dont mean the white unhealthy kind, i mean the whole-grain or whole-wheat breads.

Is it ok to have those breads everyday? and how much bread is just right? whats too much?

You have to be careful when selecting breads from supermarkets because although the manufacturers have managed to ingrain the idea that all whole grain breads are healthy, the fact is many of them are not even if they have whole grains or nuts in them.

For instance, take a look at the ingredients of the bread you're eating now. Does it list sugar or high fructose corn syrup in the ingredients? Does it have many additives and preservatives? If so, even if there are whole grains listed the presence of good ingredients does not outweigh or somehow cancel out the bad ones. There are healthy breads out there but you have to look around for them - often they are found in the health food section and are listed as sprouted breads and are made up of all whole ingredients.

Yes, humans have been eating bread for thousands of years, but what people have to realize is that in the past breads were very simple, few ingredients, typically stone ground with little or no sugar and other junk added, often in the form of flat or unleavened bread. The breads we get these days are made in factories and often highly processed and not that wholesome, in spite of what manufacturers claim (we shouldn't always believe what the manufacturer is trying to sell).

Here are a couple of examples. Here's a popular brand touted as healthy, but look at the ingredients - the third ingredient is HFCS, there is also modified corn starch, various oils, molasses and several additives/preservatives:

Take a look here, this is an example of a very healthy bread:

No sugars, additives or preservatives and LOTS of healthy whole grains. You decide which is healthy.

Humans ate bread for thousands of years as the sole source of food. Bread is fine.

Bread is very healthy for the body and yes it is good to have it everyday. It is important to have all parts of the food pyramid in your diet. It's all about moderation, bread is good for you but it shouldn't be the only part of your diet. You should have 6-8 servings of grain everyday, but this includes pasta, rice, cereal, etc.
