I'm a 35yo male and was recommended fish oil supplements, good idea?!

Question: I've heard some of the hype, don't know how beneficial it will be to me. I heard that there is a risk that some of the fish oil could contain high levels of toxins, ie mercury and pcb's etc.

I was given a bottle of 1000mg tablets, if I should take them, how often?

It is a very good idea and will benefit your health. Check the label of the fish oil to see what all it contains. Fish oil is a rich source of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil seems to protect against heart attack, stroke, cancer and inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. It is involved in protection against disease in several ways. The most important include "thinning" the blood and preventing blood clots, and being converted into less inflammatory prostaglandins and reducing inflammation. Oily fleshed, cold water fish like salmon and sardines are the best sources of fish oil, although pharmaceutical grade fish oil capsules are available and may be used if higher amounts are needed for specific conditions. If you use fish oil capsules, choose a product that is free from heavy metals and toxins that may also contaminate fish.

They are very beneficial and a very good thing, but i would only recommend taking them once a day to start off with.

Also either take it at night or with food, you will have some very disgusting burps.

Fish is very useful containing omega3 and omega 6 lardaceous acids. I would suggest you to read this article, which is very understandable about omega acids.
For the pills I will give the floor to a doctor ;-)

If you feel uncomfortable taking fish oil, a substitute would be to take flax seed oil capsules. They are high in omega 3 and are beneficial, but do not contain mercury, etc, since they come from the flax plant.

Absolutely! I am a 37 year old male and I take 2000mg of fish oil a day. As a matter of fact, fish oil supplements can be as good if not better than staten drugs at lowering the bad cholesterol and raising the good.

You are correct however that there is risk of mercury and other toxins. The trick is to buy only the kind that is in a gel cap and has gone through what is called " double molecular" testing. That is what makes it virtually free of mercury and other toxins.
