Because of our friends who fast for religious reasons, science is looking at it as a means to better health. I fast and it has been healthy for me. First off, we all fast that it why the first meal of the day is called breakfast ( you are breaking the fast ). That being said, breakfast need not be at 7:00 in the morning if you don't want it to be. I break my fast after 2:00. I then eat within a 4-5 hour window which includes dinner and snacking. I am an extremely healthy eater and this lends to a healthy fast. Also, I lost 10 lbs since April.

These are some of my favorite links to refer to on this subject.
Once upon a not to long time ago, fasting was a fact of life. Without a fridge, grocery stores,no McDonalds. People had to rely on their own sweat and tears to put food on the table as you will learn in these links.. If you used the term fasting back in those days, you would probably have to fast for 3 days before you could consider yourself fasting since you were already going for 20 hours or more without food. These people were healthy. If they weren't, we would not be here today.

i wouldn't fast just to lose weight. it can end up becoming a disorder and will ultimately screw up ur metabolism and cause you to gain weight in the future. try something like eating healthy and exercising instead

It's a short term solution that can do more damage than good. The best way to lose weight is to eat well and exercise :(

fasting is a religious practice
your talking about a crash diet
which can kill you

Fasting to lose weight is a very bad idea because:
1) In fasting if you do burn any fat calories that is all you are getting - you are not getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs for daily wear and tear.
2) You can pass out due to lack of food. I know one person that did.
3) Your body actually goes into "starvation" mode after a period of no food and does its best to minimize use of calories. That is to say you can actually lose weight faster by eating 3 balanced meals a day of reduced calories than by fasting.
4) Diets for quick weight loss as opposed to long term life style changes usually back fire because at the end of the diet you'll typically overeat to compensate and will eventually put the weight back on and may even add more.
5) Diets alone are not a good way to lose weight as noted above - you need to add exercise as well. This doesn't have to be major weight lifting - I lost significant weight simply by doing power walking and controling my caloric intake.
