GYMNASTS/DANCERS:: Does anyone know a really good stretch to keep your hips squa!

Question: I have the splits...but my hips aren't square. I don't really know how to fix this problem :( So does anyone know a really good stretch to get their hips square. And if you don't know what I'm talking about-don't ask.

Don't know if you'll find this helpful, but...

I've done Iyengar yoga five years now.

Before I started, I could do pretty passable splits, both side-to-side (in yoga called samakonasana), and front-to-back (hanumanasana).

(try Google image search on either those terms to see examples)

Before yoga lessons, when doing front-to-back, I didn't spend any effort trying to keep hips square.
Instead, I allowed hips to turn out to the side, so that in effect, the hips were pointed off at about a 45 degree angle from direction of forward leg.

My yoga teacher taught me to practice the pose without going fully down into it.

Instead, to only go as far as possible while keeping both the hips and the shoulders/chest pointing straight foward in the direction of the front leg.

If you go to site http://elsieyogakula.wordpress.com/2007/...
near bottom of page, look for a pic labeld "Hanumanasana prep".
That is an example of practicing the stretch while keeping the hips in correct alignment.

My 'hanumanasana' is now much nicer.

Namaste' & good luck,
dwb

Try some yoga stretches. Especially one that's called "standing mountain" (I believe that's the name).

OK well this is what my coach has us do sit in you split then square your shoulders by pushing one shoulder forward and the other back if you work on doing this and trying to shift you hips the same way it should help so if you are doing your left leg split you should have your right shoulder pressed forward and the left shoulder back and for your right leg split you should have your left shoulder forward and your right back
I hope this helps GOOD LUCK!
