Of course it depends on the effort which you put in, but i have neeb lead to believe that I cross trainer is better. It has something to do with your feet constantly being in contact with the surface of the machine.
Also you can go backwards on the, which works on different muscles. By also using your arms, you get your blood moving around your body a lot quicker.
I would be more inclined to get a cross trainer, or at least I use it a lot more at the gym, because I can just go walking or running outside!

I assume you mean like a rowing machine or a gazelle or something. This will burn more calories assuming the same amount of effort, because the cross trainer recruits more muscle gourps.

Not exactly sure what a 'cross trainer' is, but the answer would be whichever one gets your heart rate higher.

Calories are a unit of measure indicating energy content, in this context, the energy content of food. Oxygen is required to release this energy, i.e., burn calories. Your cardiovascular system delivers the oxygen.

Higher heart rate = more oxygen delivered = more calories burned.
